Signs You Need an Electrical Panel Upgrade in Polk County

Published

Your electrical panel is the one part of the house that every other circuit depends on. It was sized for the loads of the year it was installed, and most homes have added a second AC system, a pool pump, a kitchen remodel or an electric car since then. These are the signs we look for when homeowners in Lake Wales, Lakeland and across Polk County ask whether it is time to upgrade.

Eight signs the panel is out of date

Any one of these is a reason to have the panel looked at. Several together usually mean a service change.

  • You need a larger service for an addition, new loads or an EV charger
  • The panel is original to the home and the home is more than thirty years old
  • Breakers trip constantly, or you have run out of open spaces and are doubling up
  • Your insurance carrier is asking about the panel, or has declined to write coverage
  • The panel is a known problem brand: Federal Pacific Stab-Lok, Zinsco or Challenger
  • You still have a fuse box rather than circuit breakers
  • There is rust, moisture staining, scorching or a burnt smell in or around the enclosure
  • The main breaker is warm, or the panel buzzes and crackles under load

Why Florida panels wear out faster

Humidity and driving rain can get into an outdoor meter can. Over the years that rusts bus bars and breaker clips until they no longer make solid contact, and cracks the insulation on the service entrance. A panel that looks fine from the garage can still be failing where you cannot see it.

A panel swap is not a service change

A service change replaces the panel and often the meter can, the service entrance conductors and the grounding system with equipment rated for what the property draws today. A complete, permitted upgrade covers:

  • A load calculation that sizes the service to the property, not to a guess
  • A new panel and breakers, and where required a new meter can and service entrance conductors
  • A modern grounding electrode system, brought to current code
  • AFCI and GFCI protection where the code now requires it
  • Every circuit identified and labelled legibly
  • Utility coordination, the permit and a passed inspection you can hand to an insurer or a buyer

How long will the power be off?

For a typical residential service change, expect the power to be down for most of a working day. We pull the permit and coordinate the utility disconnect and reconnect ahead of time to keep that window as tight as possible.

Size it for the house you will have in ten years

The panel is the cheapest part of the job. The labor, the permit and the utility coordination cost about the same whatever size you choose, so if the panel is being opened up it should be sized for what you will add later, not only for what you run today.
